Matsutake Sustainability Studies West Side

"Does matsutake fruit production increase, remain the same, or decrease using the least disturbing harvest methods?"

The year 1999 marked the beginning of west side sustain ability studies. Goals are to determine if matsutake can be harvested continuously, and produce the same numbers and biomass (weight), long term.

Flag color indicates one year fruiting, 1994 blue, - 1999 green.

Treatments are divided into two categories.

Control fruiting cap diameter is measured and animal browsing is recorded throughout monitoring period. Mushrooms not harvested. (Left)

Best Management Practice (Hand Method) fruiting is measured, weighed, and assessed for animal damage at time of harvest. (Right)

Twenty-five sets of treatments were applied in 99. Treatment application and monitoring will continue. Goals are to monitor fifty treatment sets for 10 years.
