Well here we are in the November month, usually the last gasp month around this area.... So far some Chanties (not many places left) a bunch off cauliflower .... and that's about all she wrote. Still some believers around here.... but all of them are poor. Trick or Treat, what do you think?

@zed my mistake being as most of the posts are gone from the 24th onward i thought you were responding to me directly. and with what you said about buyers claiming a flush i agree completely. from what i've read we are the exception here rather than the rule, and i don't think it would be enough to make up for the shortfall on the rest of the island of that i'm certain. of course my hope was that everyone would experience the late yet productive patches we have... and i'm saddened for everyone that is not the case. i'm certainly not making any money on it most we are picking has been personal and friends to start with (freezer full of oil packed lobsters and chanties now) we've sold enough to pay for gas when we go to town for supplies which is good enough for now. i'm a hobbiest picker to begin with and not doing this with the illusion i will be getting much out of it other than the delight of discovery and a full tank. Here's to everyone having a better season soon come

Pines are still scarce around here. Found just one or two here and there. More luck than anything. Found a beautiful hill loaded down with lobsters, so I settled. Some days are just like that. Go for the gold and you come home with the bronze. Mother Nature is sure making up for the lack of rain this summer. Haven't had a dry day in over a week...full buckets, matsigurl

Rainforest I do have a problem. When a buyer posts "there is a flush in....", pickers get burned. My reference to bs is the latest in port hardy. Most pickers have to travel 500 km round trip ($50+ worth gas, etc) for maybe 20 lbs $60.... the buyer does not care they may get a few hundred lbs. When cranberry, buyer in port, other reliable poster are reporting zitch.... I think the zilch is reliable. If others have found some small area that bucks the trend more power to you. This year. I go for personal use and give to friends. I am not spending gas for someone else gain. Zed

There truly is a lot of beautiful chanterelles growing around the lakes here in the East side of Vancouver Island. 4-5 pickers around the general area I am picking and I still come away with just over 100 fresh chanties in around an hour and a half. Would have stayed longer but got called into work :D Tomorrow is another day! Full buckets all

@zed i don't mind people thinking i'm full of bs, comes with the territory, internet is like that. bill didn't seem to think i was having problems find quality chanties. it was a problem a few weeks ago even for me they were scarce but the west of the island had a wetter spring right through until the end of june, which may have made a difference we didn't dry out as much as the south and east island. there are some good golds out there if you know where to look. but i know in CR they have had issues with what people are bringing in, we do this for fun not to make money and i'm picky and i don't pick old mushy shrooms. no one is picking where we are, maybe that might be why you think i'm full of shit. oh well your problem not mine. it's more important to me what the buyers and chefs i'm sell to think of them so at least i can pay for gas money.

Hi everyone out there.i have lived in hope for 30years ,and picked pine for 27years.I have been watching this site for quite some time now and can't help myself from laughing everytime I see someone post that "hope is popping".what a Joke!.There is no more here than anywhere els, probebly less.I have been out scouting many times and found verry little or nothing. Its just another year with nothing.Ive seen this happen before for 3 years in a row at one time, that was a bummer. Some people call 3 or 4 mushrooms a Pop,or they might find one button and say there coming.Never the less there is nothing popping in or around hope.Sorry about the long post.good luck to all.

So I finally get that elusive order from Japan I've been chasing and there isn't a buyer to be found around here. Season's done which is probably why I got an order.....they probably can't get any mushrooms in Japan either! -5 Last two nights so anything out there is probably worthless anyway. Oh well......

I was outside tofino in september for a few days at redneck beach (dont ask why) and they were getting a few chanties then but hardly anything. I can't imagine there would be anything but pines out there now and based off how the rednecks camp I cant imagie the mycelium could survive a single harvest. Shit tickets everywhere, a fire the size of my tent every night and running around the woods in corkboots. no wonder the regular buyer in the area wanted to hit me when I said thats where I was going and the other pickers told me I should walk the 20KM up the logging road at 11 pm. Now that I know more I understand why the word rape was used so often.

GeetarDave, give me some of that weed you are smoking, and that goes for anyone else who thinks the Island is going to have a chanty flush. Even mother nature is confused at this point...I see she did chunk out a few whites, only about two months late though - guess she didn't communicate with her alter ego that it was going to freeze and snow hard the night before...anyway, I'll give anyone a hundred bucks AND my right testicle to show me some pics of a REAL flush that is happening RIGHT NOW anywhere on this damn rock!

hi sumtimers, same goes for you too - start wearing out your fingertips phoning the restaurants and high end hotels with restaurants. or, put an ad on craigslist or kijiji, or usedeverywhere.com. good luck. Sell direct. also, there are still some farmers markets open that can't be too far away from you, more than likely. and, failing that, Christmas markets will be starting up really soon too.

hi nikki, there are at least two excellent restau's in Courtenay you should contact. They are both into doing local stuff, so phone them - I'm sorry that I can't remember the names off the top of my head. Also just start phoning them all, frankly. And then work your circle outwards from town. otherwise, cook 'em up and freeze for the table later! :)

Every other area upcountry got 4 inches of wet snow saturday. 540 to wrap it all up at $20lb. Thats it for this year for me but expect locals to be good for another week. Everyone at the Zoo bugged out sat after 4 inches of the wet white stuff sat am

Went out for a leisurely walk in the woods near a nice Lake I often visit, found 3 seperate flushes loaded with fresh and delicious Golden Chanty's! Zed, I was out above Campbell River a few days ago. There is a chance fore a short season if new ones come up. So far there are older mushrooms that waited it out for the rain and didn`t get much bigger and they are opened right up. Tiny shrooms, not worth the work. Pines on the other hand are "NON" existant, along with a whole host of other shrooms that didn`t show up yet this year. One of those things that makes ya go Hmmmmmm

Hmmm thanks fainforestgrl. Tree planted all over Woss and Tahsis and Port Alice when I was a younger buck...never thought of the mushroom possibilities at the time though. Good to hear you've found some. Wouldn't expect it to be that good truthfully...they always seem to peter out for me when I get much past Sayward, but what do I know really. Zed!!!!!!! Everything is DEAD!!!!!!! I have hope for a pine season for the central island, but I think the chanties are toast.

Newbie_picker: when I used to pick in Nakusp and Kaslo; a good frost would make the chanterelles all mushy. Some years I found them solid into the end of October. Hope this helps.

Hello out there. I am very new to mushroom picking and would like to know (in general), when are chanterelles done for the year. I am near Nakusp in BC where we have some much needed rain. From the posts, I expect that will help. But, when is it too cold? Thank you for any comments!

@cranberrydawg coming down to CR will work thnx! i've been crawling around up woss, PA and down tahsis way for the last week the rains have the chanties popping, found some great batches last 3 days, esp today. all the little buttons growing up nicely. it was looking like it was going to be a bust last week all drying up but i've come across some nice patches this week. still not good for pine that i'm finding, boletes were a total bust this year and lobsters were all full of worms, i'm keeping positive though :) wish you full buckets the rain will help

Waerewt, the snake, mushroom bandit, and matsi pickerman,I thought you were all quite humorous! I know that you were just being sarcastic. So no name calling or bullting from me! If I offended anyone, I apologize. She did get a rise out of me, as raking is a VERY sore subject for ALL of us. Just to claryfy to anyone who doesn't know...raking is NOT an enviromentally sustainable way to harvest mushrooms! You should not take ALL of the mushrooms when you pick either. But raking will kill an area off for quite some time! It damages the mycillium. On a happier note, I have noticed the last few years that there is less raking going on around here. I am hoping that people have figured out that raking is BAD! Full buckets ya'll!

BOYZLIKEDEER; You are very welcome, hope it is not all dried up by the time you get there. ……………… horacewayne; good luck, you might look at the buyer list and see if Erv Ballou a Shelton buyer is on the list, I know he watches this board and will know what is happening. …………… Shroomertom; I have researched in NorCal, some picker groups have one designated driver to run their mushrooms to wherever the current price is best. Even if it is a hundred miles or more, some were driven down from Washington and even Canada back in the high-price days. If you know what type of soils or sands are where, then it is easy to watch and probably know where the crop was harvested. ……………… waerewt; I thought it was a humorous posting about mining for matsi, no one can legally hydraulic, in this country at least and of course no right-minded person would ruin a good patch that way anyway…. too funny.

I've only got a day so not enough time to pick enough to keep the missus happy so I need to buy some (for personal use). If anyone is able to sell some perhaps we can meet up in BB or in the Valley. Email today please. Seouljohn @ hotmail.com or cell 250 318-2261

Checked a good producing spot this afternoon and found three pines and very little else ,,no russulas , a couple of chantrelles and a distinct lack of general growth.. we have had lots of rain in the last week and i think the month or so of drought conditions finished a lot of mushrooms .. hopefully not all areas are the same ... thing i noticed most was the small mushrooms are not there the small tiny ones that you have to look hard for ,,, Lily 15 do you not live in a matsutake producing area now? full buckets gl and you can find me "in the woodpile"

Hey Jef - if you are looking for a buyer in the fraser valley, check out Ponderosa Mushrooms, or Canadian Rockie Matsutake Ltd. in Richmond. I have sold to both in the past but have since found private buyers at markets and several people who buy pounds and pounds of dried. I hope this helps and good luck - if you find someone else please let me know - thanks! Some restaurants are now interested in pines as they find them to be unique to other mushrooms.

If we are all mushroom pickers "in this together" then why all the secrecy? There are miles and miles of mountain and forest for us to share - I'm certainly not too concerned about being followed to my patches. I used to live and pick in the Kootenays and always steered new-comers in the general direction where pines grow. I have found that there are areas with pines that are generally well-known, so why not help someone as I was helped? I am an old-timer when it comes to mushroom picking so I go by the honor system - newcomers always gave me their word they would not follow me to my patches and they never did. For the person looking for a mushroom buyer in Nakusp: I used to sell to Dan & Jan's mushroom station 250-265-4622. IF they no longer buy they will give you the name and number of who to contact. Also, they will know who is buying in Winlaw and Kaslo. Hope this helps.

If its been this long and BB hasn't produced any numbers I doubt it will. Those steep hillsides shedwater pretty quick. The tiny babies are probably shrivled uo anyhow. You never know though I've picked there till it froze over. two times. Good one matsipickerman. I was thinking larger scale though. The way they used to mine for gold. Just make a gravity fed high pressure water line then I could blast away hugh sections of the mountain side then scoop up the valuble butons as they float by. Come to think think of it I could use the proceeds to buy a whaling vessle.

Golden Lobo: The uninitiated may not know that many of the mushrooms coming into Chemult are from Doris (CA). These can often be distinguished by the copious quantities of black dirt/mud all over them! Rainstorms there kick out big quantities. Patrick used to get some of them in K-Falls.

If your having trouble findig the buttons I would suguest using this method; Take a lite easy to carry lawn mower, using the mower shave off the layers of forest floor one at a time. between each layer you should be able to spot then remove buttons a s they apear. Now if you do this slowly, it will not harm the patch at all.

Idaho and NW Montana?- I see there are pops in Slocan (north of me), and have found info on Bitterroot areas( south of me)....I finally found a huge population of Kings this summer in NW Montana that no one seemed to pick-figure that Matsies are out there too...gonna check my Fish Lake, Wa.spots in the next couple of days on way home to Montana but seems too soon....thanks for any info

hey guys I'm new to picking shrooms. this site has been really helpfull. Wondering if there are any buyers in the Hope area. Found some flags today but they were all really mouldy or covered in jumpers. I'll check back there in a few days when it gets colder.

BOYZLIKEDEER; I just called a buyer friend in Chemault and he gave me permission to post current situation, if you go there ask for Joe Berry, he has always treated me fair. ........ Currently no rain even though 70% chance predicted. #1 grade has been at $25.00 but higher grade volume seems to be dropping from the 30% over-all total it has been. …….. Volume about 3,000 lbs per day but he did not specify if that amount of volume is being purchased in Chemault or if it also includes Crescent Jct. ……… From past experience I would venture that even if 3,000 pounds is being purchased daily in Chemault, part of that volume may be coming up from NorCal. Good Luck & Full Buckets….

Hey ya'll! I am gonna be staying at a resort in Welches, Oregon all next week. Does anyone know how the 'shroom season is shaping up on Mt. Hood yet? Have traveld around that area a bit, but used to pick on the ZigZag, and it is mostly all non trespassing now due to it being a watershed for Portland. Any areas that are good? (I know about old maid flats already). Any ideas would be welcome! Thanks! and full buckets to ya'll!

Hey Garf, I found a bunch of 5's above 3000 ft near that lake to the north of you. If I only knew the old cold snap had set them off. Was a good example of matsi pulling the trigger in bone dry conditions.

Maw : The current prices in Nakusp are, 16, 10, 7, 3, 1. If the Lobsters are still good quality which a lot are not now, I am still taking them along with the pines @ Jean's mushroom station just past the Kuskanax bridge in town on the way to Revelstoke. Does anyone pick in BB and area? There has been a lot of rain over the past 3 days so the pines should be popping. Does anyone know if there is a buyer in BB or Hope? Have picked this area for 10 years and there hasn't always been a buyer so I've sold to private markets but would be wiling to sell to buyer if one is available.

LOL.. Bitch.. Bitch.. Bitch.. Still the same after 4 yrs. Prices went down to $1 a pound for pines.. I went back to school and got a real job. Picking was fun, the reality is I can't feed my family on those prices. When I feel like going out to pick for $$ , I go to a buyer and just ask him/he to kick me in the crauch. LOL. Sheesh.

i here you cranberry.... ala my stories about IT and TW over the past few years. i think that it is partly that they have reduced their cycle and also that they are "creaming" and leaving a ton of wood on the ground.... whatever they are doing it is sad for the outdoorsperson... maybe we are a dying breed? the real crappy part is thier are new roads into all my current patches and with no season this year i may not get a final pick before i say goodbye for this lifetime. more rain and a partial season would sure help my mood. zed

Thanks cranberrydawg, for the update. Confirms my suspicions. I went to my normally productive fog patch the other day, that at this time last year had already given me around 30 lbs of whatever, and still there was only one chanty, and no evidence of anyone else picking there. Very sad. And also, the Pacheedaht logging project/partnership, known as Queesto here on VI, is having some company do a ton of logging down the lower westcoast here. Unreal. They too have annihilated some of the nicest chanterelle patches around, at break-neck speed, and then have these massive slash piles, all the way up the hill. It's pretty pathetic. I can see them logging like that in beetle kill zones, but here? Why not some more selective logging? (i know our coastal mountains and slopes are excessively rugged, but...) Anyway, that's enough out of me. The apple and other fruit crop this year has been wonderful so far, and I have plenty to keep the dehydrator busy with. I hope after this rain we get a season of some kind. Please let me know if anyone is finding boletes of any kind this year, specially kings. Just curious. Full buckets!

Guess my little quip would have made more sense if I got the acronym right...for all you sticklers, of which I am one, I meant HAARP. And this gets me thinking...I wonder if all this ramping up of the logging and overall denuding of the landscape has anything to do with this record breaking dry spell we just experienced. Hmmm.

Back from the Cranberry where the crop is pretty much dead. If you want hype and bs I can give you that but...took one circle burn around the patches on the Island and correct me if I'm wrong buyers, but if there is a thousand lbs on this whole damn Island, then I'll eat every last one of them. Never seen it so dry, or the rivers so low...all the secondary waterways are bone dry. And congratulations Island Timberlands, Timber West and Western, you have outdone yourselves this year...how you manage to find and decimate each and every patch I'll never know. If I was a conspiracy theorist I'd say it was by design...oh, wait a minute, I am a conspiracy theorist. At any rate nuke it all fellas! Pave it, build your condos and whatever the hell else it is you're planning. Oh, and while you're at it, phone up HARP, we need some rain.

If it should and (I see it may) stay warm for the next three week's we well have a nice crop of pine's along with Bolete's and if the warm weather last up to four week's your Chantarelles well last tell Christmas and here on the eastside there over tell July 2013.

Road 23, almost everything you would ever need to learn about pine’s is in this site. Basically for a pine it is temperature that you need to pay the most attention to. Moisture such as comes from rain may trigger other mushrooms to flush but with pine’s it increases the size of individual mushrooms.

Hey Rejeanne /Just over the hill /The Snake, The prices for pines in Nakusp are 16, 9, 6, 3, 1 for the 1,2,3,4,5's. Lobster and Chanties are pretty much done. Strange year here, seems that some patches are finishing while some are just starting. Some patches had a late summer flush while others didn't. We have some very good quality mushrooms coming in but also have some poor quality / dry ones also, depending where they are being picked. Its seems that some areas are a bit late. Not sure if the predicted rains will help or be too late, we'll see. We usually go until the end of Oct. and sometimes a week or so into Nov. weather depending. For more info email me at: hewat@telus.net Happy picking to all!

Due to the extremely unusually hot and dry weather this year we have closed our buying station until at least after the forecasted rains. The volumes and quality we need to have to insure our products have a shelf life are simply not able to be maintained. We would like to thank our awesome pickers that worked with us on trying to meet our customer orders. We would also like to thank our customers for your patience with the weather and your committments we share to provide quality products to the wonderful people who look forward to quality fresh chanterelles.

What is the best way to preserve the pines, freeze or dry? What technique for freezing raw, steamed, blanched, sauteed, flash freezing? Any advice? I would rather keep what I have instead of sell for a few bucks. I picked about 4 pounds in two hours, half at least are number ones.

The mushrooms seem to be opening up kinda small too. i geuss they think the season wrapping up. With the rain in the forcast that should change. I'll fill up the back lof my 3/4 with buttons. Thats a shame though because anytime anyone brings in any quantity there the price goes down too two bucks a pound. In all the years I've camped out and picked in Nakusp I've never made money. Kitwanga eh ... that is where i camped a few years ago and did some picking ... campground across from the gas station and the little general store with the payphones out front... that was fun.. a guy named Len who had picked there for years kept sending us to places to look ... anyhow i think we were doing scouting for him ... ended up further north and did quite well ... sold to Cathy in a camp below the road before Van Dyke... i remember an older fella there had a portable generator and had a shower that he let us use ...now that was one of the best showers i ever had after being bushed for a few days... then we discovered the laundromat with showers in Hyder on a beer run... good luck on your setting up for buying Shane ... its a tough one ... fair prices will always bring you good pickers tho... maybe i can get up that way next year .. tomorrow its off to Vegas and i hear we are expecting rain the day i get back so just maybe it will happen a bit yet .... firewood orders will have to go on hold if my patches start producing ... wood isnt as perishable ... and i got lots .. full buckets

I did the rain dance, the rain disco, and the rain boogie. Still nothing. Not a rain drop in sight for days. I guess we just wait for Mother Nature to decide when she will bless us with much needed rain. Everyone please keep an eye peeled for unattended fires and be sure to never leave one. IT IS EXCEPTIONALLY DRY IN THE GIFFORD PINCHOT NATIONAL FOREST. Did some open air camping last night and despite the mid-30's temps, woke up without a drop of dew on my sleeping bag. So please be careful and full buckets to everyone who has mushrooms to pick. Matsigurl!

Please everyone...watch for any unattended fires and never leave one. IT IS SUPER FIRE conditions. Crunchy dry. Not even much humidity; went camping open air last night and the blankets hadn't even been touched by the morning dew. They were dry as can be...although it was down in the 30's. I guess all we can do is wait it out. Until then, full buckets to everybody who has mushrooms to pick. Still waiting in SW Washington...matsigurl!

I would like to let our pickers know that our buying station here at Tseshaht is now open---right now our buying hours are between 4:00 and 7:00 (this will change as the daylight changes)...we will not be open on Sundays (that is grandpa day)---we do have our GACP food safety and quality assurance program in place and if you have not sold to us before you will need to speak with me before our buyer will be able to buy your mushrooms.....our office number is 250-720-8907 and my cell phone number is 250-731-3998....Our opening prices for yellow chanterelle mushrooms is six dollars a pound. I hope everyone has a good and safe season in the woods.

Looks like the mushroom trail is producing full buckets. @shane I'd be interested in learning more about your buying company. As a Ktunaxa, I have access to setting up a buying station in Nakusp and Kimberley, or other locations in the Kootenays. I'm at kitunaha[at}hotmail dot com. I could meet in person as I'm in the Nass and will pass by your location when I go south again.

@L4L...... Are you getting these freezing nights over there too? Been -1 to -5 in Kitwanga every night for the last 4 or 5 nights. I have been working on setting up my own buying company since April and have a great list of contacts in place. I am going to try and attend the Food Expo in Japan in the spring and see if I can lock down some contracts. I would be more than willing to work with the Nisga'a if something goes through. I plan on having 5 buyers set up for the Gitksan if all goes according to plan.

Have you guys really only been picking that much? Been getting over 10lbs+ of 1's Everytime I go out. Sooo slow though! Usually pulling out 30-50lbs+ at this time! Weather is a bummer this season. Prices are hurting as usual. Wish we could get a hold of the market seeing as the shrooms go for over $80 a lb in Asia. Love my back yard in canyon city. should find our own buyers and sell them ourselves. Good luck on the pickin!

Took me 2 half day picks to accumulate 8.14 lbs buttons, sold at $8. at 5pm. Sad... Mushrooms were in old patches that have'nt hit for at least 15 years, strange. Memories of seasons past. No shortage of pickers. Full Buckets

Matsutake2012.com, I for one thank you for sharing research studies. I find that when I think that I know everything about a mushroom type I have closed my mind to future learning.

kootenay brother; Nakusp is one of the nicer hot springs, I am envious and wish I were near a nice natural springs at the end of the day. I last researched in the Nakusp area so long back that my brain cannot quite recall when, perhaps about 1997. I never seemed to get there when the pines were pumping in volume. I prefer picking near hot water to soothe my old aching bones following a long day of mushroom foraging.

Mushrooms are still under in some of my patches, an I'll let them rot there. To much effort... for little payback. Check area's every couple days... maybe... if I feel like it. Full Buckets

Prices are fluctuating quite a bit. Some opened at $11 today. Talked to a friend who just hit a patch that was supposed to be exploding and he and his daughter found next to nothing. Rumours are so much fun!

Got back from studies this morning. By the way, this is our 19th year. Anyway, found about 30 mushrooms out of 160 patches. Most of them were deep. Veteran pickers know what that means. Still a chance for a decent flush in 2 to 4 weeks if the temps are right. Not quit as bad as last year, but close. The mushrooms we found were in about 5 patches. I'm sure there are small areas producing fair amounts, but not many. Only a slight chance of showers in the forecast, and a cooling. What we did find had no bugs of any kind. Matsiman

@ Garf....... So far I've been staying home trying to stick to my "real" job. LOL. I have to admit, hearing about someone finding 15+ lbs in the Nass has me VERY tempted to check my Cranberry Patch. Fry only finding a little over 5 lbs brings me back down a little though. I think if the Wife and I can get out together on a weekend, we may head out and check it. I'm not taking any more days off of work though. Too much disappointment this season already.

Some people don't care about common courtesy. Heck, I stay out of patches if I know my buddies are on a cycle in them. There's enough bush to pick my own spots :)

We have been picking mushrooms for years, mostly for personal consumption. This year we have taken our daughter out with us for her to earn some spending money. On Saturday we were picking and were in hearing distance to the road when we heard a door slammed, my first thought was did I not lock my vehicle? At this point I started making my way back to the vehicle, approx 200 feet away but can't see the vehicle due to the trees etc. and with a recovering broken ankle from this spring, I can't walk as fast I used to. Part way down I stopped as I found 4 buttons, finished picking and looked up and less then 20 feet away another couple started looking in the same area as my husband. When we pick, if we saw a vehicle and found someone in the area, we moved onto another area, is this not common courtesy? Ended up being not a bad day 16 lbs found, 5 pounds of which were #1.
